Sonos plans to release a competitor to Apple TV
Sonos is developing a premium set-top box expected to launch this year, The Verge reports. The novelty will compete with Apple TV, but will cost more - in the range of $200 to $400.
The Sonos smart set-top box is codenamed Pinewood. According to The Verge, the novelty will have an inconspicuous black body, slightly thicker than a deck of cards, with a remote control included. The device will run on the Android operating system with the Sonos interface.
The set-top box will provide access to Netflix, HBO Max, Disney Plus and other streaming services in a single software environment with universal search support. The device will be equipped with Sonos Voice Control.
The Sonos set-top box will also act as an HDMI switcher and have HDMI ports with pass-through support. Users will be able to connect game consoles, soundbars, and other devices.
For Sonos users who have speakers but no soundbar, the set-top box will allow them to set up a surround sound system. It will also support Wi-Fi 7 and have gigabit Ethernet.
As a reminder, Sonos faced difficulties in 2024 after the failed launch of the updated app, which eventually led to the resignation of CEO Patrick Spence. Therefore, the company needs to succeed in 2025 to restore its reputation.
