Premier of Canada's largest province cancels Starlink contract over Trump tariffs
Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, said on Monday, February 3, that he was terminating the contract with Elon Musk's Starlink in response to Donald Trump's tariffs against the country, AP News reports.
Dog Ford signed a C$100 million ($68 million) deal with Starlink in November 2024 to provide residents in remote parts of the province with access to fast internet. However, following Trump's laws targeting Canada, the agreement will be terminated.
In a post in X, Ford said that starting February 3 and until the US tariffs are lifted, Ontario bans any provincial contracts with US companies and at the same time terminates the existing agreement with Starlink. "Canada didn't start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we're ready to win it," the Prime Minister wrote.
Earlier, Donald Trump announced the introduction of tariffs, or additional taxes, on imports of goods from Canada, China, and Mexico. Most products from Canada will be subject to a 25% tariff, and the tariff on energy will be 10%.
