At present, the company's taxis are driven by supervisory drivers who are ready to intervene if necessary.
The new service will be provided only in cars from Tesla's fleet, although Musk had previously promised that Tesla owners would be able to add their cars to the Tesla network. Elon Musk compared the gradual launch of the new service to entering the water.
"We just want to put a toe in the water, make sure everything’s okay, put a few more toes in the water, with safety of the general public and those in the car as a top priority," Musk said.
In a letter to shareholders, Tesla reported that as of January, its customers had driven more than 3 billion miles in Full Self-Driving mode under supervision. The company believes that this technology is a step towards fully autonomous cars, but emphasizes that drivers should remain attentive, as the system does not yet provide full autonomy.
Tesla also claims to increase computing power for AI training by more than 400% in 2025.
The company recently published a video showing dozens of Model 3 and Model Y cars "without human intervention" driving about a mile on Tesla's private, closed factory roads. Musk has said that Tesla's self-driving cars will soon be operating at its factory in Texas.
