The U.S. Navy has instructed its members to avoid using artificial intelligence technology from the Chinese company DeepSeek. The corresponding warning was sent to "fellow officers" by email, CNBC reports.
It says that DeepSeek's AI cannot be used due to "possible security and ethical concerns related to the model's origin and use."
The note states that it is "extremely important" that team members do not use DeepSeek's AI "for any work-related or personal use." The recipients of the letter are asked to "refrain from downloading, installing, or using the DeepSeek model in any capacity."
A US Navy spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the email. The statement comes after DeepSeek released a powerful new artificial intelligence model called R1 that competes with OpenAI technology.
The Chinese company's model is open source. The novelty from DeepSeek soared to the top of Apple's App Store, pushing ChatGPT from OpenAI.
