Lonestar Data Holdings has announced plans to launch the first-ever data center on the Moon. This will be an important step in the development of space infrastructure, TechSpot writes.

The launch of the mission, which involves the delivery and installation of a data center on the Moon, is scheduled for February 2025. The mission will be carried out by Intuitive Machines and delivered by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The mission involves the use of advanced technologies to ensure autonomous operation of the data center in space. This project aims not only to expand the capabilities of data storage and processing in space, but also to open up new prospects for future space missions and research.

Establishing a data center on the Moon will allow data to be processed directly on site, which will reduce delays and costs for transmitting information to Earth.

This step could also serve as a basis for creating more complex space infrastructures in the future, including bases for research and commercial operations.

By the way, Lonestar Data Holdings has been working on the project for several years, having successfully tested data storage on the Moon last February and on the International Space Station in 2021. However, installing a complex facility like a data center on the lunar surface remains a huge technical challenge.

Harsh environmental conditions, maintenance difficulties, and astronomical costs can cause serious problems. There are also risks associated with launching into space. In case of failure, there is no way to recover the equipment. Luckily, the data center will have a backup on Earth at Flexential's Tampa center.
