The sensor has a resolution of 24K. Canon expects it to be used in "surveillance, medicine, and industry" where there is a demand for "extreme resolution."
Typically, large numbers of megapixels are only found in cameras with medium format sensors. However, Canon's decision to cram so many pixels into 35mm is so that these pixels can be used with lenses designed for full-frame sensors.
The new sensor has a redesigned circuitry and "back-illuminated stacked formation" where "pixel segment and signal processing segment are interlayered." The reading speed is 3280 megapixels per second, and video is eight frames per second.
The monochrome version of the sensor can combine four pixels simultaneously to capture even brighter images and record 100-megapixel video at 24 frames per second.
However, it is unlikely that this new type of Canon sensor will become a widely accepted standard among consumers in the near future.
