The joint project, called Stargate, will start with the construction of a large data center in Texas and gradually expand to other states. The initiative will start with $100 billion in investments, with the prospect of increasing to $500 billion within four years. The companies promise to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and ensure US leadership in artificial intelligence.
“The Stargate Project is a new company which intends to invest $500 billion over the next four years building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States,” OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank said in a joint statement. “This project will not only support the re-industrialization of the United States but also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies.”
The project aims to create a unique infrastructure that will provide capacity for complex artificial intelligence models such as GPT. Stargate will address the issue of scaling AI technologies and become a platform for their further development. The initiative combines advanced technical achievements with environmentally friendly approaches.
The companies announced the initiative at a press conference at the White House on January 21, where President Donald Trump spoke about plans to invest in US infrastructure. The event was attended by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.
Microsoft is also participating in the Stargate project as a technology partner, as are Arm and NVIDIA. MGX, an artificial intelligence fund from the Middle East, will join SoftBank's investment. However, SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle are listed as "initial investors" in Stargate.
