More Android Automotive apps coming to Google Play
The problem with Android Automotive is that developers need to adapt their apps separately to make them convenient and safe to use while driving. However, starting from February 2025, this process will become much easier, which will lead to an increase in the number of car apps, according to Android Authority.
Google has quietly announced that mobile apps that will be ready for use in cars will be available in February. This will be part of the program announced at I/O in May 2024. It will use applications from Google Play that are already optimized for large screens, such as tablets or chromebooks, and provide a user-friendly experience in cars.
Not all applications optimized for large screens can be downloaded to cars. In particular, ARM applications will not be supported, as many cars are equipped with x86 chips. In addition, Google is focused on integrating apps in the video, gaming, and browser categories.
"The Car ready mobile apps program distributes eligible mobile apps in the video, games, and browsers categories to cars with little to no additional development work. Starting in February 2025, eligible apps will be available for download from the Google Play Store in cars that run Android Automotive OS with Google built-in," says the developers' page.
Another limitation for Car Ready apps on Android Automotive is that they cannot be used while driving. These apps will only be available when the car is parked. This decision is explained by the fact that the applications are not yet fully optimized for use in cars and may pose a danger while driving.
