Five years ago, also at CES, Sony partnered with Honda to unveil an unexpected electric car. At the time, the concept was called Sony Vision-S and its future was in doubt. Over these five years, the electric car has received a different name - Afeela, clearer updates, prices, and the company has revealed a little more detail.
For example, those who want to buy a new electric car can already pre-order for $200. Currently, this can only be done in the state of California. There are two configurations available - Afeela 1 Origin for $89,900 and Afeela 1 Signature for $102,900.
In both cases, customers will receive a three-year free subscription to additional services, such as second-level auxiliary control systems and an AI assistant.
The more expensive Signature version will be the first to be delivered to customers. The electric car is expected to be available in mid-2026. The Origin option will have to wait a year longer.
The Afeela 1 is equipped with all-wheel drive and 180 kW (approximately 241 hp) motors at the front and rear. The battery capacity is 91 kWh. The expected range on a single charge is 300 miles, or over 480 km (EPA). The charging port type is NACS Supercharger, which means it is fully compatible with Tesla Supercharger charging stations.
Both cars will offer 40 different sensors, AFEELA Intelligent Drive (Level 2+ ADAS), AFEELA Personal Agent, a large instrument and entertainment panel, Media Bar, 5G connectivity, spatial audio, etc. The difference in equipment is that the more expensive version will offer more body colours and interior trim, additional displays for rear passengers, Centre Camera Mirror System, larger and more interesting wheels.
Sony Honda Mobility has only just launched pre-orders and it is not yet known when it will be expanded beyond California and the US in general.
