The company Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has introduced the HMD OffGrid — a compact device for smartphones that provides satellite communication where mobile networks are unavailable.
The gadget uses the L Band satellite radio spectrum to provide direct communication with satellites for Android and iOS users. The HMD OffGrid weighs only 60 g, has military-grade durability (MIL-STD-810H), a three-day battery life, and a relatively affordable price of $199.
Jean-François Baril, co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Human Mobile Devices, emphasized the importance of accessible solutions for communication in areas without mobile coverage.
“HMD OffGrid is a new, affordable, portable, and easy-to-use device that is reliable in critical situations. Whether you're hiking in the mountains or skiing off-piste, HMD OffGrid ensures that you'll never be without connection.”
Key features of HMD OffGrid:
- Two-way messaging via the OffGrid app;
- Live location tracking for up to five contacts;
- “Check-in” button for quick status updates;
- 24/7 emergency SOS service via Overwatch x Rescue by FocusPoint International.
The company notes that HMD OffGrid is designed for travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and remote workers to ensure connectivity anywhere in the world.
In addition to the cost of the device itself, HMD OffGrid requires a monthly subscription, with pricing depending on the chosen plan:
- HMD Unlimited Plan – $14.99/month or $139.99/year, includes unlimited messages, check-ins, and SOS services, additional live tracking for $4.99/month, and a one-time activation fee of $9.99;
