At TSMC's factory in Arizona, half of the workforce consists of specialists from Taiwan. This decision was made due to the need for experienced staff to complete the project on time, according to Tom's Hardware.
Arizona's labor unions have expressed outrage over TSMC's decision, believing it deprived local residents of jobs. Additionally, lawsuits have been filed against the chipmaker, accusing the company of racial discrimination.
Currently, there are about 2,200 people working at the new factory, with approximately 1,000 of them coming from Taiwan. TSMC plans to address the situation by expanding the factory and hiring more Americans for new departments.
In addition to this, TSMC had work policies that contradict those of the U.S. Specifically, the company encouraged employees to work extended hours, which is not common in the U.S. The company has also been accused of favoring Taiwanese employees for promotions.
It is expected that the percentage of American workers will increase as additional departments are built at the factory in the coming years. The three-phase project will eventually create around 6,000 well-paid jobs.
