Samsung announced that it has become the largest shareholder of South Korean company Rainbow Robotics with the goal of accelerating robotics development in the future.
The Korean tech giant first acquired a 14.7% stake in the robot manufacturer in 2023 for 86.8 billion Korean won ($58.8 million), and now plans to pay an additional 267 billion won ($181 million) to increase its share to 35%. Samsung will also become the parent company of Rainbow Robotics and strengthen its leadership.
Through this partnership, Samsung aims to "further strengthen its position in the development of advanced robotics technologies." By combining its own software and artificial intelligence advancements with Rainbow Robotics' expertise, both companies hope to accelerate the creation of intelligent and advanced humanoid robots.
Rainbow Robotics was founded in 2011 by researchers from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), who developed Korea's first bipedal robot, Hubo.
