Microsoft is exploring alternatives to OpenAI’s artificial intelligence for its Microsoft 365 Copilot products, according to Reuters.
Anonymous sources suggest that Microsoft aims to reduce 365 Copilot’s reliance on OpenAI due to concerns over cost and performance for enterprise clients. The goal is to make 365 Copilot more cost-effective for Microsoft and potentially lower prices for consumers.
A Microsoft representative stated that OpenAI remains a key partner in advanced model development. Additionally, Microsoft has the ability to fine-tune OpenAI models for its needs.
Alongside training its own smaller models, such as Phi-4, Microsoft is also working on customizing other open-source models.
Microsoft is already integrating models from other companies into its products. For instance, GitHub Copilot includes models from Anthropic and Google as alternatives to OpenAI’s GPT-4.
