MARA Holdings Inc., one of the largest Bitcoin miners in the world, uses residual heat from cryptocurrency mining to heat 80,000 people in Finland.
The company launched this project in June 2024. During the first phase, MARA stated that it would use the heat generated from Bitcoin mining to heat 11,000 residents in the Satakunta region of Finland. Since then, the number of residents has increased to 80,000.
This holiday season, we’re excited to bring the gift of warmth to even more homes with the addition of our second district heating project warming a city of 67,000 residents with #Bitcoin mining. We now proudly provide heat to nearly 80,000 residents across Finland. ❄️🏠♨️ pic.twitter.com/s5Vvz0ps5v

As part of this project, residents are provided with centralized heating, which includes heating water and distributing it through underground pipes for heating local buildings. In addition to warming homes, this project helps the company reduce carbon dioxide emissions and lower operational costs.
MARA previously explained how this project works. Hot air emitted by servers used for mining is directed to a heat exchanger, which transfers heat from the air into water at 25-35°C. Afterward, the hot water is supplied through pipelines to the district heating center, where heat pumps increase the temperature to 80°C. The heat is then distributed to homes, while the cooled water is returned to data centers, where it is reheated.
