TikTok has appealed to the US Supreme Court to block the law on the forced sale or ban of the social network in the country. This was reported by NBC News.
The "Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act" will require the Chinese owner of TikTok, ByteDance, to sell the platform to a US company or face a ban on its use in the US.
TikTok appealed to a federal appeals court to suspend the law, but the court denied the request. Now the company is appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court and asking for action by January 6, 2025.
"Today, TikTok is asking the court to do what it has traditionally done in free speech cases: apply the most rigorous scrutiny to speech bans and conclude that it violates the First Amendment," said TikTok spokesman Michael Hughes.
If the judges reject TikTok's request, the law will come into force on January 19, 2025. However, President-elect Donald Trump has promised to meet with TikTok CEO Shou Ji Chu ahead of a possible ban on the app. Trump said he has a "warm spot" for TikTok.
