To be able to install Windows 11 on a computer, it must have TPM 2.0, a trusted platform module responsible for system security.

In its blog post, Microsoft emphasizes the numerous benefits of TPM 2.0. The company notes that this module helps to protect personal data, verify the integrity of the OS at startup, and generally provides "a vastly more efficient and secure platform for Windows 11 to use through advanced encryption methods, improved industry standard cryptography, increased isolation, and greater interoperability with other security functions."

One of the disadvantages of the Trusted Platform Module is that it was only introduced to computers after 2016. This means that users with outdated computers will not be able to upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft seems to understand this and has even launched separate ads at the OS level, calling for the purchase of a Copilot+ computer.

Moreover, the company claims that TPM is not just a desire, but a necessity. It is likely that Microsoft may in the future begin to combat workarounds to install Windows 11 on older computers without the Trusted Platform Module.

As a reminder, Windows 10 support will officially end on October 14, 2025. After that, users will still be able to receive security updates, but they will have to pay for them.
