Google is testing an updated assistant for Nest smart speakers based on the Gemini language model. The assistant will get a more natural and "live" sound, providing users with an experience similar to Gemini Live. This was reported by Android Authority.
Users who have the updated assistant say that it uses the new voice only for conversational responses and reverts to the old voice in all other cases.
A Reddit user demonstrated this in a video. The assistant answers the question "How are you?" with an updated voice, but uses the old voice when asked about the weather.
It's not a full-fledged Gemini Live, as the assistant has a rather short memory and is unable to support long abstract conversations. However, the updated version is under active testing. Unfortunately, there is no date for the full deployment yet.
