LG Display has unveiled a new flexible display prototype that can stretch up to 50% of its original size. Previous prototypes were stretched by 20%. This was reported by Tom's Hardware.
In addition to stretching, the display can be freely twisted, compressed, and folded without any damage. The prototype in the image is a 12-inch screen with a resolution of 100 pixels per inch and full RGB color gamut. It stretches up to 18 inches.
LG Display said it created this display based on a "special silicon substrate in contact lenses". To improve the stretching results, a new wiring design and a micro-LED light source were used, allowing users to stretch the screen repeatedly without any impact on image quality.
The flexible display project is supported by South Korea at the state level, and the program is led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea (MOTIE) and the Korea Industrial Technology Planning and Evaluation Institute.
In fact, in addition to LG Display, which took the lead, more than 19 South Korean industrial and research institutions are involved in the development of the current stretchable display prototype.
Developers offer many options for using this technology, from clothing to flexible car panels. LG demonstrated at the exhibition a concept where the display is attached directly to the firefighters' uniforms and displays real-time information for the rest of the team.
