Samsung has held another presentation of its new Galaxy Unpacked devices, where it showed new smartwatches, headphones, and foldable smartphones Samsung Galaxy Flip6 and Galaxy Fold6. Just like during the presentation of the Galaxy S24 line, the main emphasis was placed on its AI platform Galaxy AI. Now it will be available on new smartphones and wearable devices. But for now, let's tell you a little more about Samsung Galaxy Flip6 and what's new in it.
Updates to the Galaxy Flip6 design
The previous generation of Flip brought many significant improvements. This year, the innovations in Samsung Galaxy Flip6 are not so dramatic. The design has remained virtually unchanged. At first glance, it will be difficult to distinguish it from the previous models. Even the dimensions are almost identical to the previous model.
But there are still some design changes. An updated hinge is used, thanks to which the smartphone has become slightly thinner when folded. This was made possible by reducing the gap between the halves of the smartphone. Also, thanks to the updated hinge, the crease on the screen has become noticeably smaller. Yes, we haven't managed to completely remove it yet, but the progress is very significant.
The body is still made of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and metal. But now the glass on the back is matte instead of the glossy one in Galaxy Flip5. Silver-gray, yellow, blue, and mint colors will be available. The smartphone is protected against dust and water according to the IP48 standard. That is, Samsung Galaxy Flip6 is not afraid of immersion in water, but sand can disrupt the hinge.
If we talk about the first impressions of Samsung Galaxy Flip6 from the previous model, the differences are really minimal. The familiar folding design with a large internal and smaller external screen, a fingerprint scanner on the side, and buttons in the same places. So you won't have to get used to it when you change.
Improving the technical component
Both screens are said to be brighter. And the internal coating is more durable. But if we talk about the specifications, they remain unchanged. The internal one has a diagonal of 6.7 inches, uses Foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a resolution of 2640×1080 pixels, 425 PPI, and a refresh rate of 1-120 Hz.
The outer one has a slightly unusual shape with a cutout for the dual main camera. It is 3.4 inches diagonal, Super AMOLED, 720×748 pixels, 306 PPI, 60 Hz. It can be used as a viewfinder for the camera, you can view notifications, messages, control the player, and more. It supports many widgets. And, thanks to its rather large size, it is really convenient to use.
Samsung Galaxy Flip6 received the top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor with Adreno 750 graphics accelerator, like the older Galaxy S24 Ultra model. So there's no need to worry about performance. Structurally, such smartphones have a very dense layout of internal elements. And clamshells usually get quite hot due to the lack of a good cooling system.
Samsung claims that the Galaxy Flip6 has improved the situation and uses an evaporation chamber to cool the powerful processor, which was not present in previous models of the line. The amount of RAM has increased from 8 to 12 GB, and the storage capacity can be 256 or 512 GB. Wireless interfaces: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e and Bluetooth 5.3.
Despite its similar weight and size, Samsung Galaxy Flip6 has a 4000 mAh battery. For comparison, the Galaxy Flip5 has 3700 mAh. Yes, the difference is not dramatic, but it's not bad either. Fast charging support has remained unchanged: up to 25 W with a cable, 15 W wireless charging. There is also support for reverse wireless charging for headphones or watches.
Cameras and program features
Samsung Galaxy Flip6 has a dual external camera and a front-facing internal camera:
- Main module 50 MP (f/1.8, 1.0 µm, PDAF, OIS);
- Ultra-wide-angle 12 MP (f/2.2, 1.12µm, 123˚);
- Front 12 MP (f/2.2, 1.22µm).
The previous Galaxy Flip5 had a 12MP main module. It is claimed that the new 50MP camera allows you to take zoomed-in photos without degrading the quality. Simply put, 50 megapixels allows you to take crops with sufficient resolution.
The form factor allows you to use your smartphone as a kind of tripod, as well as shoot video while holding it like a video camera. Interesting features include automatic zooming and focusing on the desired object.
Samsung Galaxy Flip6 runs on Android 14 with One UI 6.1.1. As in the case of the Galaxy S24 line, the smartphone now offers new Galaxy AI artificial intelligence features. For example, real-time translation of phone conversations, Chat Assist texting assistance, automatic text formatting, generation of short summaries from large texts in the form of main points, wallpaper generation, and the ability to search for objects on the screen in Google.
The camera also has some new features. For example, automatic leveling when the horizon is blocked. And it's not just alignment with cropping the excess, the camera can "draw". The downside is that the vast majority of functions in Ukrainian are available only online, although for more common languages it is possible to download the package and use it without a network connection.
Conclusions
The rapid development of smartphones is over, and we shouldn't expect any "revolutionary" updates from each new generation. Samsung Galaxy Flip6 received a little bit of everything: an updated slimmer hinge, a top-of-the-line processor with an updated cooling system, an improved main camera, and a larger battery. And, of course, Galaxy AI, which Samsung has been focusing on lately. So it's a pretty good update with no surprises.
