Meta is in talks with South Korean AI chipmaker FuriosaAI and may announce plans to acquire the company as early as February 2025, TechCrunch reports.
FuriosaAI, founded by former Samsung and AMD employees, creates chips to accelerate AI models, including textual models such as Meta's Llama 2 and Llama 3.
So far, FuriosaAI has attracted about 90 billion Korean won ($61.94 million) in investments, including from Naver, South Korea's largest Internet portal and search engine. Earlier, the company reported negotiations with potential buyers in the United States, Japan, and India.
Like other players in the AI industry, such as OpenAI, Meta aims to reduce its dependence on NVIDIA chips, which remains the market leader. Earlier, the company announced plans to invest up to $65 billion in AI.
