Google Maps has changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf at the request of the administration of US President Donald Trump. This was reported by TechCrunch.
One of the many executive orders that President Donald Trump signed on the day of his inauguration was an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf. The order also reverses the Obama administration's decision to change the name of Mount McKinley to Denali, a name used by indigenous peoples for centuries. It is worth noting that the name Gulf of Mexico has been the most common name for this body of water since the 16th century.
Only users in the United States will see the change in full, while Mexican users will not see any changes. For the rest of the world, the Gulf will now have a double name.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would send a letter to Google challenging the company's decision to rename the Gulf.
By the way, Apple has not updated the names of the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali in its Maps app. When you search for "Gulf of America," the app finds nothing.
