The American company Cloudflare has released its fifth annual report on Internet trends and patterns observed during 2024. According to the company, global Internet traffic increased by 17.2% in 2024.
According to Cloudflare, 41.3% of the world's Internet traffic is driven by mobile devices. In almost 100 countries, the majority of traffic comes from mobile devices. In particular, Android accounts for 90% of traffic from mobile devices in 29 countries, while iOS has the highest rate of 60% in 8 countries.
The report also notes that Google remains the most popular Internet service in the world. OpenAI leads in the generative artificial intelligence category, Binance leads the cryptocurrency category, WhatsApp retains its position as the main messenger, and Facebook remains the most popular social network.
The company also reported that in 2024, Starlink's global traffic grew 3.3 times. This is due to Starlink's active entry into new markets, which contributes to the increase in overall traffic.
Googlebot, Google's web crawler, generates the largest volume of requests to Cloudflare, which provides the network with content delivery, DDoS protection, Internet security services, and DNS server services.
The traffic of the ByteDance AI web crawler gradually decreased. At the same time, the traffic of the Anthropic AI web crawler first started to grow in April, peaked in May and June, and then started to decline again.
The company also shared additional details about Internet traffic. Google remains the main search engine in the world on all types of devices, while China's Baidu is second with a big gap. Chrome remains the main browser, even on macOS, but not on iOS.
In 2024, on average, 4.3% of emails were malicious. Cloudflare believes that these figures may have been influenced by the spikes in activity recorded in March, April, and May. Misleading links and identity impersonation remain the two most common threats in malicious emails.
