Google increases support for Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold smartphones
Google has decided to change its Android OS update policy for the first two generations of Pixel devices with Tensor chips, 9to5Google reports.
Now the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold smartphones will receive Android updates for 5 years instead of the originally planned 3 years. In addition, Google confirmed that these devices will also continue to receive new features through Pixel Drops.
On the official website, Google noted that 5 years will be counted from the moment when the device first appeared in the Google Store in the United States. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro started selling in October 2021, so the 5 years will end in October 2026, so they should get Android 17.
As for the Pixel 6a, it started selling in the US in July 2022, so the 5 years will end only in July 2027. If the stable update of Android 18 is released in June 2027, then it can receive this software version. Similarly, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, which went on sale in October 2022, should receive an update to Android 18.
