An advertisement for a new $OPENAI token with a link to a phishing site suddenly appeared on the official OpenAI account in X. But it was soon removed without any comment. This was reported by The Verge.
On September 24, at 04:24 Kyiv time, @OpenAINewsroom, an account that shares OpenAI news and has almost 54,000 followers, published a post, which has now been deleted, advertising the $OPENAI token.
“We’re very happy to announce $OPEANAI: the token bridging the gap between Al and blockchain technology,” the post said. “All OpenAI users are eligible to claim a piece of $OPENAI’s initial supply. Holding $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future beta programs.”
The message also contained a link to a fake version of the OpenAI website at an address that was not openai.com. This site had a section for applying for the $OPENAI cryptocurrency. In this section, the site asks for access to the visitor's crypto wallet, which, of course, should not be done.
OpenAI does not comment on this event. A separate news account, @OpenAINewsroom, was launched in early September this year and promoted on the main OpenAI account.
