Epic Games is launching Fab, a new marketplace for user-generated content that will replace the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, ArtStation Marketplace, and Quixel. Fab will be released in mid-October 2024 and will offer users an 88/12 revenue split.
All content creators who use the Unreal Engine Marketplace are already invited to bring their content to Fab. From the beginning of October, publishers will be invited to join. Sketchfab users will have a tool to migrate their content, and the goal for the ArtStation Marketplace is to migrate user products in 2025.
Moreover, Epic Games says that all publishers that switch to Fab will receive 100% of the profits by the end of 2024. In addition, as part of a promotion with Adobe, users who publish a licensed product on Fab or make a minimum purchase of $25 will be eligible to receive a free 6-month subscription to Adobe Substance Painter and Modeler.
Epic Games also told us what we can expect at Fab:
- Supports multiple engines and platforms, allowing you to create content compatible with many game engines, including Unreal Engine and Unity (and more!), as well as dozens of digital content creation tools such as Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D, and Adobe Substance 3D.
- A wide range of asset types: 3D models, 2D assets for game engines, environment elements, audio, tools, and plug-ins in various formats.
- Integration with Unreal Engine and UEFN, which will allow creators to access Fab content without leaving the editor and easily add resources directly to their projects.
- A next-generation real-time 3D viewer that allows creators to check 3D assets and publishers to easily present their work in real time.
- Powerful search tools that allow authors to quickly find the right file formats or resources at the right price and under the right license.
- Various license types with tiered pricing for standard licenses, allowing sellers to make products available for purchase at different price points for personal or professional use.
- AI transparency, which allows creators to control whether their products can be used to train generative AI programs, requires vendors to clearly indicate whether their products were created using generative AI programs, and ensures that Epic Games will not use or enter into agreements with others to use creator content to train generative AI programs.
Epic Games also announces that Fab will completely replace the Unreal Engine Marketplace. Content from Sketchfab will be migrated over the next few months, and the Sketchfab Store will eventually cease to function completely. Content from Quixel Megascans will also be migrated to Fab, and in 2025, the platform will undergo changes and almost all content on it will no longer be free.
