Meta introduces teen accounts on Instagram for users under the age of 18. Such accounts will have a high degree of protection and will be private by default. This is stated in the company's blog.

"We know parents want to feel confident that their teens can use social media to connect with their friends and explore their interests, without having to worry about unsafe or inappropriate experiences. We understand parents’ concerns, and that’s why we’re reimagining our apps for teens with new Teen Accounts," says Meta.

Accounts for teens will have built-in protections that limit who can contact teens and the content they see. Teens under the age of 16 need parental permission to change any of the settings to a less restrictive one.

The main settings for these accounts will include privacy restrictions, messaging restrictions, restrictions on sensitive content, interaction restrictions, sleep mode enabled, and reminders about time limits on the social network.

Meta plans to introduce accounts for teens in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia within 60 days. In the EU, such accounts are to be launched later this year.

Teens around the world will start receiving teen accounts in January. The company will also add teen accounts to other Meta platforms next year.
