The developer of the original Flappy Bird, Dong Nguyen, broke his six-year silence on social media to announce that he has not sold the rights to the game to anyone and condemns everything related to "crypto".
No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything.
— Dong Nguyen (@dongatory) September 15, 2024
I also don't support crypto.
The Verge reports that Gametech Holdings LLC filed a trademark challenge to Nguyen's Flappy Bird trademark in 2023. The US Patent and Trademark Office recognized his trademark as abandoned, terminating his rights to it in January 2024.
The Flappy Bird Foundation did not mention developer Dong Nguyen in its announcement last week. But it certainly relied on the nostalgia associated with his game. Much of the game's trailer is devoted to the game's growing cultural phenomenon and the disappointment of its sudden disappearance in 2014.
Flappy Bird is currently scheduled for release on iOS and Android in early 2025. The new developers say: "Flappy Bird will fly again". But it seems that this bird will not fly far.
