Qualcomm is exploring the possibility of acquiring part of Intel's microchip business to expand its own product portfolio. The company's executives are most interested in Intel's PC business, but other departments were also considered. This was reported by Reuters.
Other segments of Intel's business, such as server solutions, are not of interest to Qualcomm, given the company's scope of work. According to people familiar with the matter, the acquisition of this part of the business makes little sense for the mobile chipmaker.
Such discussions have emerged against the backdrop of long-term problems within Intel. Similar conversations within Qualcomm have been going on for several months now, but no final decisions have been made so far, and things could change.
Intel representatives told Reuters that Qualcomm has not approached them with any such proposals and declined to comment on their plans. At the same time, the company itself remains deeply committed to its PC business.
