Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber said that the company is thinking about a mouse that can be used "forever". The device will receive software updates on a subscription model. This was reported by ArsTechnica.

Logitech's innovation center has already developed a prototype of the "forever mouse". The company compares it to a not very expensive but nice watch.

"... I’m not planning to throw that watch away ever. So why would I be throwing my mouse or my keyboard away if it’s a fantastic-quality, well-designed, software-enabled mouse? The forever mouse is one of the things that we’d like to get to," says Hanneke Faber.

It should be noted that this is not an announcement. Faber spoke about it on a podcast to which she was invited as a guest. The company has not announced any specific plans to launch such a product.

However, Faber seems quite optimistic about the idea. The challenge, she says, is to find a business model that will provide lifetime support for the equipment and still be attractive to users.

It is not yet clear how the company is going to ensure the "eternity" of the mouse. However, the implementation of affordable self-repair paired with downloadable updates could work.

Logitech already sells spare parts for self-repair of some of its mice and other gadgets through iFixit. This range could be expanded to offer more instructions and support more products.
