Assassin's Creed Shadows developers appeal to Japanese players

Recently, a petition was posted on the change.org website in Japan calling for a ban on Assassin's Creed Shadows, a new game in the world-famous Ubisoft series set in feudal Japan.

Soon after, it turned out that many of those who signed the petition had no connection to Japan, were not Japanese, and were mostly just unhappy that the game had a black samurai named Yasuke.

Nevertheless, the Japanese gaming community also signed this petition, but its main complaint against the developers was that feudal Japan of those years was portrayed without respect for the country's culture and its authenticity.

Developers from the Ubisoft Quebec team working on Assassin's Creed Shadows finally broke their silence and commented on the situation. In a post published on social media, they noted that the development team has put a lot of effort into "providing an immersive and respectful representation of feudal Japan."

They also noted that the developers had consulted with many people knowledgeable about Japanese history, who helped the team to recreate the country of those times as best as possible. However, the statement immediately asked not to blame these people for any of the creative team's decisions.

"Despite these sustained efforts, we ackowledge that some elements in our promotional materials have caused concern within the Japanese community. For this, we sincerely apologize," the statement reads.

At the same time, the Ubisoft Quebec team says it is only using real feudal Japan to tell a fictional story. The statement goes on to say that Assassin's Creed Shadows, like any other part of the series, is not historically accurate, but only tries to encourage players to learn more about the history of the times and places covered in the games.

Assassin's Creed Shadows will be released on November 15. Recently, Ubisoft presented a new trailer for the game, which you can watch below.
