Google reports that from August 25, 2025, shortened goo.gl links will no longer work. This was reported by 9to5Google.
The company developed the goo.gl link shortener in 2009, but with the development and emergence of Firebase Dynamic Links, the need for address shortening disappeared, but Google continued to support the service for a while.
Google announced the closure of the goo.gl link shortening service for new users and developers in 2018. In 2019, the service was shut down completely. However, the links themselves are still supported.
Starting August 23, 2024, Google will show an intermediate page when clicking "This link will no longer work in the near future". Users will be able to move on after clicking the "Continue" button with the "Don't show this again" option.
Google warns developers that "the intermediate page may cause disruptions in the current flow of your goo.gl links."
"For example, if you are using other 302 redirects, the interstitial page may prevent the redirect flow from completing correctly. If you’ve embedded social metadata in your destination page, the interstitial page will likely cause these to no longer show up where the initial link is displayed. For this reason, we advise transitioning these links as soon as possible," the statement said.
Google also adds for developers that if the intermediate page violates the usage scenario, it can be disabled by adding the "si=1" query parameter to the desired shortened goo.gl link.
