The analytical company International Data Corporation (IDC) has shared a new report on smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2024. Total shipments in the market grew by 6.5% year-on-year, and Samsung, after losing its position to Apple in 2023, is leading the entirety of 2024.
Despite the fact that smartphone shipments have been growing for the fourth quarter in a row, which contributes to the expected recovery, IDC noted that demand for smartphones has not yet fully recovered and many markets remain problematic for manufacturers.
However, the top 5 manufacturers are still seeing year-on-year growth. Thus, in the second quarter of 2024, Samsung ranks first in terms of shipments. The company holds 18.9% of the market with 53.9 million smartphones, although the growth since last year is only 0.7%.
Apple took the second place. The company's smartphones occupy 15.8% of the market, a 1.5% increase compared to last year. In the second quarter, 45.2 million iPhones were shipped.
Xiaomi is in third place, having seen the largest increase in device shipments this year. The company's smartphones accounted for 14.8% of 42.3 million units, a 27.4% increase. Next, the 4th place is shared by vivo and OPPO, which shipped 25.9 and 25.8 million devices respectively and occupy 9% of the market. However, vivo's growth is 21.9%, while OPPO's is only 1.8%.
All other manufacturers accounted for 32.3% of the market, shipping 92.1 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2024, 2 million more than in the same period in 2023.
IDC notes that companies in the top 5 see an increase in the supply of artificial intelligence, which is now being actively implemented by all large companies.
According to the company's analysts, the excitement created by smartphones with generative AI will continue to grow by the end of the year. The demand for AI smartphones is expected to grow faster than the demand for any other mobile innovations.
