A free version of Bungie's classic shooter Marathon 2: Durandal, the predecessor to Halo and Destiny, has been released on Steam.
Classic Marathon 2 – is an Open Source version of Marathon 2: Durandal (Bungie released the game code to the public in 2000) from the Aleph One team of enthusiasts on the Aleph One engine (development of the Marathon 2 engine), which allows the game to run on modern hardware.
All games of the Marathon trilogy: Marathon (1994), Marathon 2: Durandal (1995), and Marathon Infinity (1996), the Classic Mac OS classics that defined many of the features of modern shooters, have been available on Aleph One 's website for some time now, and they've finally started appearing on Steam.
Classic Marathon was released on May 10, 2024, and Classic Marathon 2 was released on July 12, 2024, so we can expect Classic Marathon Infinity in a few months.
In 2023, it became known that Bungie was working on a new game from the Marathon series. The new Marathon is a competitive PvP shooter with evacuation mechanics. In March 2024, it became known that the company had changed the director of Marathon development and postponed the project's release until at least 2025.
Well, as long as Bungie is slowing down, everyone will have the opportunity to touch the classics, especially since this is the first opportunity for PC players to play Marathon (1994). 30 years for porting seems to be a record. Marathon 2: Durandal was released on Windows a year after the original Mac OS version. Marathon Infinity has not yet been ported to Windows.
