Although Fedora 41 hasn't even been released yet, early feature planning has already begun for Fedora 42, which will debut in the first months of 2025. One of the interesting suggestions that have been received so far is the use of the DRM Panic screen for a kind of "blue screen of death". This was reported by Phoronix.
DRM Panic was introduced in Linux 6.10, but even more features are being developed for 6.11 and later versions. In version 6.11, it is planned to add support for monochrome logos, as well as the ability to embed QR error codes in the DRM Panic screen.
The proposal was put forward by Red Hat engineers Jocelyn Falemp and Javier Martinez Canillas. The proposal is to enable DRM_PANIC for Fedora kernel builds. This will bring Fedora closer to the long-term goal of disabling CONFIG_VT.
"This change will improve the user experience when a kernel panic occurs. It's also a first step to switch to userspace console, and being able to disable CONFIG_VT in the kernel. VT and fbcon are legacy part of the kernel, that would reduce maintenance burden if we can disable them, and It will also reduce CVE impact, as userspace vulnerabilities are usually less critical," engineers write.
The proposal has yet to be voted on by FESCo, but for those interested, the draft in its current form can be found here.
