In the United States, less than 50% of electric vehicles sold between April and June 2024 were made by Tesla, despite the fact that overall sales of electric vehicles in the country reached record levels. This is reported by The New York Times.

Between April and June, Tesla's share of the electric car market was 49.7%, down from 59.3% in the same period last year. The company sees the greatest competition from such manufacturers as General Motors, Ford Motor, Hyundai, and Kia.

According to research company Cox Automotive, this is the first time that the company's market share has fallen below 50% in a quarter. Cox estimates the market based on car registrations, company reports, and other data.

Sales of electric vehicles in the United States grew by 11.3% year-on-year, and although this is less than the 40% increase that occurred in 2023, it is still positive growth. During the last quarter, Americans purchased or leased more than 330 thousand electric vehicles, which is 8% of all cars in the last three months.

Today, buyers' attention is shifting to well-known car manufacturers with a long history and large dealer networks that can provide service and repair, such as BMW or Ford. At the same time, Tesla sells cars online, and buyers say that it can be difficult to get a car repaired in the company's relatively small network.

Last week, Tesla reported that global sales of electric vehicles in the second quarter of 2024 fell by 4.8% to about 444 thousand cars. The company does not report sales by country, but Cox estimates that sales in the US fell by 6.3% to 164 thousand cars.
