This year's strikes in Hollywood did not allow artificial intelligence to take away people's jobs. However, many questions remained after the strikes ended. One of them is how to use AI, writes WIRED.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike in May. One of the issues of concern to the writers was the use of AI in scriptwriting. The WGA was negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents Hollywood studios.
In the fall, the Guild finally won. According to the contract, artificial intelligence will not be used to write or edit scripts, and the texts created by it cannot be used as source materials.
Another strike announced by the actors' guild SAG-AFTRA. This protest action started in July and lasted until November. One of the main reasons was that studios wanted to get AI copies of actors to use them for free and without time limits. Eventually, the parties found a common ground.
Although the screenwriters and actors won, many questions remain after the strikes. For example, whether the studios can be trusted to self-regulate. Or, in the case of the WGA, whether actors will be able to use their AI copies to play roles that could have gone to human performers. These questions will not be answered for a long time.
However, not only actors and screenwriters fought against AI this year. Writers have also joined the resistance. They are concerned that large language models are learning from their works. That's why there was a lot of information about relevant lawsuits in the information space.
For example, it recently became known that the Pulitzer Prize winners are suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. This is not the only example.
Concerns about AI have arisen in various industries. Therefore, governments are trying to resolve this issue and figure out how to use the technology safely. As you know, this issue is being aggravated, in particular, in the US, the EU, and the UK.
At the same time, many people use machines to improve their work. For example, proponents of artificial intelligence argue that the technology can develop new forms of creativity.
At the same time, it seems highly likely that AI will displace many jobs for beginners in the future. However, it will create new highly skilled jobs.
There are a lot of questions around the technology. One of the main ones concerns what exactly AI will learn from humans - new skills or prejudices.
